10-days route around Andalusia (Montejaque
- Cordoba - Baza - Monachil - Frigiliana) |
| |
This trip
bring you to a few natural parks like
Grazalema, Sierra Nevada, Sierra de Cazorla
en Sierra de Baza,
As in all the pueblos blancos, Montejaque dates from the time of the Berber settlers,
after the Moslem conquest. Located in a semi-hidden bowl hidden by circular rocky
outcrops, it overlooks a small fertile valley of olive groves.
Cordoba was founded by the Romans and due to its strategic importance as the
highest navigable point of the Guadalquivir River, it became a port city of great
importance, used for shipping Spanish olive oil, wine and wheat back to Ancient
Rome. The Romans built the mighty bridge crossing the river, now called "El
Puente Romano". But Cordoba's hour of greatest glory was when it became
the capital of the Moorish kingdom of El-Andalus, and this was when work began
on the Great Mosque, or "Mezquita", which – after several centuries
of additions and enlargements – became one of the largest in all of Islam.
When the city was reconquered by the Christians in 1236, the new rulers of the
city were so awed by its beauty that they left it standing, building their cathedral
in the midst of its rows of arches and columns, and creating the extraordinary
church-mosque we see today.
The Altiplano region of Baza is one of the unspoiled jewels of Andalusia.
Situated in the north of the Granada Province, is the town of Baza, the capital
of the overall area of the same name. The other, smaller villages in the Baza
area are: Benamaurel, Caniles, Cortes de Baza, Cuevas del Campo, Cúllar,
Freila, and Zújar.
Baza town sits at an altitude of 844 metres about sea level and has a population
of around 21,600; accounting for almost 50% of the overall 45,000 population
of the entire region of Baza. One of the most appreciated aspects of this magical
main town of Baza is the towering mountain at just 12 kilometres away, which
dominates the landscape like a protective watchtower. This natural backdrop
of the surrounding mountains of the Sierra de Baza and the Sierra de Castril
is simply breathtaking.
Just seven kilometres north of Nerja is the typical pueblo blanco of Frigiliana
which sits high on a mountain ridge overlooking the sea with spectacular panoramic
views.
Voted the 'prettiest village in Andalucía' by the Spanish tourism authority,
Frigiliana is also important from an historical viewpoint. El Fuerte, the hill
that climbs above the village, was the scene of the final bloody defeat of
the Moors of La Axarquía in their 1569 rebellion. The hill is topped
by scanty remains of a ruined fort from which some of the Moors reputedly threw
themselves rather than be killed or captured by the Spanish. It is said that
bones and rusted weapons dating from this encounter still lie among the scrub
on El Fuerte. |

Days
1st - 2nd. Hotel
in de hills of Frigiliana:
Less than ten minutes of the hanging garden of La Almijara, Frigiliana, county
Malaga, is located this hotel, a small oasis in an nazarite ambient. Sara Navas,
director-manager of the establishment, and her husband, José Luis, say
that «the establishment is a faithful image of the farms (cortijos) of
the forties decade, but adapted to the best comforts. Each room is different
and they are equipped with complete bathroom, television, firewood stove, and
wide terraces with a view to the sea. Its decoration elements, although they
are of the same style they have a different atmosphere. The headboards has recovered
from the old iron beds, the bedside tables recovered from the existent ones in
the old farms, as well as the furniture. Floors of mud and wrinkled walls, as
those of old houses of the village of Alcóncar. The restaurant, the reception,
the terraces and the whole interior have a genuinely Moorish flavor».
Its environment is rich in fauna and flora, since it’s frequently see the
imperial eagle, the mountain goat and the wild boar, among other many animals
and birds that live in its natural habitat enjoying in freedom. As for the flora,
they mix the one hoisted tropical, as the mango, avocado and cherimoya tree,
with almond trees, figs, olive trees and vineyards, these last mediterranean
autochthonous plants that proliferate in the area.

7th - 8th. Charming
hotel in the hart of Cordoba:
Dating from the 17th century, the house
still has its original subterranean rooms with vaulted
ceilings in the cellar of the hotel. The two main floors
were renovated in 1934, giving the house a distinctly
Sevillian flavour.
The central courtyard, decorated with tiles from the famous Mensaque Tile Factory
in Seville and the wrought iron columns and the marble floor which were added
at that time have all been left intact.
Especially impressive are the large handcarved antique french windows and the
majestic and elegant balustrade of the main staircase leading to a domed gallery
on the second floor.
In Cordoba, this hotel is unique for its colonial style. Its eight rooms look
onto a central patio which is full of light and colours. These beautifully
decorated rooms with their antique doors and windows, natural fabrics and cast
iron furniture all have spacious bathrooms decorated in warm colours. |
